Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College Department of Athletics has announced that Dave Magarity has accepted a position within the administration of the Department of Athletics and will relinquish his coaching duties, effective immediately. The announcement was made at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
"The college is grateful for Dave's 18-years of service as a coach," Marist College president Dr. Dennis J. Murray said. "Dave Magarity has always been a class act and as a college community we are glad to have him still be a part of our athletics program."
Over his 18 years at Marist College, Magarity led the Red Foxes to the 2002 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Regular Season Title, the 1996 National Invitational Tournament and the 1987 NCAA Tournament. The 1995-96 squad posted a 22-7 record, setting a program mark with a winning percentage of .759. He has earned Coach of the Year accolades eight times during his stint at Marist, including NABC District II honors in 1996, 2001 and 2002, MAAC Coach of the Year honors in 2001 and was named the MBWA 'Good Guy' Award winner in 1988.
Marist student-athletes were also successful under the Magarity reign, with over 90 percent of his players earning college degrees. He has coached a pair of CoSida Academic All-Americans and in the school's first seven years in the MAAC, has had 13 players earn All-MAAC Academic Team accolades. During Magarity's tenure, 18 players have earned All-Conference standing, with three being chosen as the conference's Player of the Year. Over his 18-year coaching career at Marist, Magarity has had 24 players go on to professional careers, with 11 still playing around the world today.
In 23 seasons as a head coach, five at his alma mater St. Francis (PA), Magarity won 313 games. His 18-year record at Marist stands at 253-259
A national search for Magarity's successor will begin immediately.
