Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team dropped the third game of a three-game series with Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Manhattan College, 7-2, this afternoon on the McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes fall to 9-19 overall and 5-4 in MAAC play, while the Jaspers improve to 8-15-1 on the year and 4-3 in conference action.
The Jaspers struck first, putting two runs on the board in their first at-bat. The first two batters reached on singles, and a ground ball up the middle got the first out, but the throw to attempt the double-play went into foul ground, scoring the first run. A Josh Greco double with one-out, plated the second run.
The Red Foxes answered in the second inning when Kevin Buck, led off with a walk. Justin Lepore followed with a single, and the runners advanced to second and third on a groundout. After a strikeout, Tyler Brock, doubled into left field to tie the score 2-2.
Manhattan broke the game open in the fourth, with four runs, three of them unearned on a pair of Marist errors in the inning. Manhattan added an insurance run in the seventh to wrap up the scoring.
Manhattan pitcher Chris Cody tossed 8.0 innings to improve to 2-0 on the year, allowing two runs on five hits. He fanned eight in the game and walked just two in the outing. Lucas Robinson took the loss as the Marist starter, allowing six runs, three earned, on nine hits in 3.2 innings of work. Kevin Shurtleff recorded an out against the only batter he faced, and Travis Timmons allowed a run on four hits in five innings of relief, fanning one.
Brock finished the day 1-4 with two RBI, while LePore was the only Marist player with multiple hits, going 2-4.
Frank Cappello went 3-4 with two runs scored, while Sam DeLuca posted a 4-5, one run, day for the Jaspers. Five different Jaspers recorded an RBI in the win, with six players plating a run.
Marist returns to action on Tuesday, April 13th, when it hosts Stony Brook in a 3:30 pm game at the McCann Field. Marist defeated the Seawolves 5-2 in 10-innings, when the two teams met in Long Island on March 23rd
