Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's lacrosse team rallied from a 7-1 deficit late in the third quarter, but could not catch Sacred Heart, falling 8-7 this evening on Leonidoff Field, in a non-conference tilt. The Red Foxes fall to 9-6 on the year, while Sacred Heart improves to 2-11.
After giving up two early second half goals to the Pioneers, Marist held Sacred Heart scoreless over the next 24 minutes, as they mounted a rally from a 7-1 hole. Josh Ben-Eliyahu made the score 7-2 with 2:56 to play in the third quarter, before Brian Diele netted back-to-back goals in the middle part of the fourth quarter to close the gap to 7-4. Tim Iuculano made it 7-5 with 4:49 to play, but Sacred Heart snapped its scoreless streak with 4:10 to play to take the 8-5 lead. Jay Nahama touched net with 2:14 to play and Iuculano scored with 90 seconds left on the clock to make the score 8-7. The Red Foxes had several opportunities in the final 30 seconds of play, but could not capitalize.
Diele and Iuculano led Marist with two goals each, with Iuculano also adding an assist. Nahama had a goal and an assist, as did Billy Duerr. Steve Gravino made nine saves and had six groundballs for the Red Foxes.
The Pioneers received three goals each from Peter Greco and Jorge Bravo, who also had an assist on the night. Ames Delmonico and Chase Caruso had the other goals for the visitors. Thomas Hind earned the win in net, with seven saves in the game.
Marist returns to action on Saturday, May 1st, as its hosts Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League foe Wagner. The 7:00 pm game will be preceded by a ceremony honoring the Marist College Senior Class. The Red Foxes are 7-0 in MAAC play, and looking to complete the first undefeated conference season in program history. Marist has already clinched the MAAC Regular Season crown and the top-seed in the May 7-9th MAAC Tournament at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY.
