After a stellar weekend of play, the Marist College women's water polo swept the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) weekly awards, earning Offensive and Defensive Player, and Rookie of the Week accolades. These are the first awards of the season for both the student-athletes and Marist.
Senior Alyson Fiorillo was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week after tallying nine goals and dishing out five assists in Marist's 4-0 weekend. She had two goals and an assist in the April 3rd against Utica and capped off the day by recording three scores in an 8-7 win over conference rival Siena. In shutouts against Utica and Siena on April 4th, the driver had a solid performance notching four goals, two in each game, and five assists, three against Utica, two against Siena. Overall, Fiorillo has 16 goals and six assists on the season and is Marist's all-time leading scorer with 143 goals.
Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Long was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week, after posting a 3.25 goals against average, a 65.8 save percentage and 25 saves during Marist's four-game winning streak. In the 14-3 win over Utica, she made six saves and followed that performance by posting her first shutout with an 11-save effort against Siena. On April 3rd, she had four saves in each of two games, wins over both Utica and Siena. Long also helped out on the offensive end by dishing out three assists. Overall, Long has made 145 saves on the season and yields a 9.95 goals against average.
Joining Fiorillo and Long was freshman Jillian Jefferds who was named MAAC Rookie of the Week. In Marist's 4-0 week she tallied six goals and two assists, including two game-winners, one on Saturday against Utica, the other against Siena on Sunday. Jefferds also was solid defensively with 14 steals on the weekend. Jefferds, who was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Norhteastern Player of the Week on January 29th, leads Marist with 20 goals, 46 assists and 49 steals.
The Red Foxes (5-14, 1-2 MAAC) continue MAAC play on Thursday, April 8th as they host Wagner, St. Francis (NY), and Siena beginning at 3:00pm.
