Fishkill, NY-The Marist College baseball team suffered a tough first round loss in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament to top-seeded LeMoyne College 8-2 this evening at Dutchess County Stadium in Fishkill, NY.
Pitcher Scott Chambers got off to a rocky start as LeMoyne (34-19) plated two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first to take a quick 2-0 lead. But Marist (25-29) would answer in the top of the third inning to make the score 2-1. After rookie Travis Musolf doubled down the right field line, junior Keith Brachold roped a two-out double off the left field wall to chase home Musolf. With the hit, Brachold tied the Marist single-season record for doubles with 24.
The Dolphins got the runs back in the bottom of the inning, taking a 4-1 lead on a two-run homer by Anthony Aquilino. Marist pulled within two runs in the top of the sixth inning as Justin Lepore singled home Kevin Buck.
Marist threatened in the top of the sixth as Musolf walked and Towler singled to center to put runners as first and second with two outs, but it was not enough as Tyler Brock struck out to end the rally.
The Dolphins put the game away in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring four runs on two hits and three errors. With one out and the bases loaded Michael Affronti and Andre Enriquez hit back-to-back singles to make the score 6-2. LeMoyne added another run as Steven Suarez reached on an error and plated the final run of the inning as Affronti scored on a fielder's choice by Brian Hansen to pull ahead 8-2.
Musolf went 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. Brachold and Buck each went 2-for-5 on the night.
The Red Fox defensive struggled making six errors in the game leading to three unearned runs.
Chambers (6-6) went seven innings giving up five earned runs on nine hits, while striking out two and walking four. Eric Supplee tossed a perfect inning in relief. LeMoyne's Matt Scherer (10-2) went nine innings giving up just two runs on 10 hits, while striking out 10 batters.
The Red Foxes will face #2 Niagara tomorrow May 28th at 11:00am at Dutchess Stadium.
