ITHACA, N.Y. - Leo Rodriguez and Pedro Genovese had a stellar day for the Red Foxes' men's tennis squad on the second day of competition at the Cornell Fall Invitational. Both men won a pair of singles matches to advance to the final in the backdraw of the "A" flight.
Rodriguez knocked off Mike Keller of UMBC 6-3, 6-2 and UConn's Brian Ravesloot 6-1, 6-1 Saturday, while Genovese bested Binghamton's Richemn Mourad 6-3, 7-5 and Stony Brook's Tal Meir 6-4, 6-4. In doubles play, the two also dropped UMBC's David Jackson and Irfan Shamasdin 8-5 in the opening round of play. They will face Ari Beilin and Alex Scott Sunday in the bracket's semifinals.
In that same flight of doubles, Marist's Mark Santucci and Brendon Von Wesbeck lost to Cornell's Brett McKeon and Ray Wu 8-5. Santucci fell to Beilin in his only singles action of the day, a 6-3, 6-4 decision. Von Wesbeck fell to Cornell Mike Delany 6-4, 6-3 in his match.
Marist's Ray Josephs lost to Binghamton's Alex Dobrin 6-3, 6-1 after advancing via forfeit against Mehrbran Iranshad of UMBC. Josephs teamed with Jeff Nguyen in doubles, but was defeated by Mark Piro and Alex Dobrin of Binghamton 8-4. Nguyen lost to Salih Unsal of Middlebury in Middlebury in singles by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
One of Marist's other victors from Friday, Sean Tully, also dropped a singles match to Rory Haggie of Cornell 6-1, 6-1. Tully paired with Frank Algier in doubles and knocked off Keller and Henry Hollowell of UMBC 8-4 before falling to Middlebury's Justsin Ingoglia and George Mayer 8-2. Algier fell in the "C" singles backdraw 6-2, 6-4 to Jackson of UMBC.
Tournament play will conclude Sunday.
