The Marist women's soccer team handily defeated Delaware State this evening, 11-0. It was the Red Foxes first home in of the season and second on the year, improving their record to 2-7. The 11 goal performance marks the most goals in a game in the history of Marist women's soccer as well as the largest margin of victory. This trumps the previous six goal mark over St. Peter's on Sept. 19, 2001. In addition, the team earned 31 scoring points, topping the previous mark of 17 during that same St. Peter's match.
Eight different Marist players scored goals in the win, as the Red Foxes outshot the Hornets, 62-0. Rookie Liz Herber picked up her first career shutout in goal for Marist, playing all 90:00 minutes. Juniors Jillian Berry, the Red Foxes backup goalkeeper, was the star of tonight's show as she recorded two goals and two assists to lead the offense. Classmate Ashley Johnson and freshman Kristina Anderson each recorded two goals as well.
Others scoring for Marist included: Kristen Leonhard (one goal, two assists), Courtney Moore (one goal, one assist), Libby Ludwig (one goal, one assist), Justine Caccamo (one goal), Kat Murray (one goal, one assist), Laura Clark (one assist) and Liz Egan (one assist).
For her six point effort, Berry tied the record for most points in a game set by Sarah McTurk against Niagara on Oct. 2, 1999. Berry and Leonhard also tied the mark for most assists in a game set by Jenny Shanks on Oct. 17, 2001.
The Red Foxes will next be in action when they open their MAAC season against Loyola (MD) on Friday Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m. on Leonidoff Field.
