Poughkeepsie, NY -
The Marist women's basketball team held Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Rider to just 35 points in its win tonight, a tie for the lowest output for a MAAC opponent since the Foxes first season in the conference in 1997-98. Marist defeated Canisius 61-35 on January 16, 1998. Marist junior Fifi Camara (Conakry, Guinea) recorded her third straight double-double (sixth of the season) with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Camara now has a double-double in five of Marist's six conference games this season.
Marist got off to a slow start in the first half, and the Broncs picked up a 14-9 lead spurred by six points from Leanne Moore at the 11:19 mark. Just under two minutes later, Nikki Flores (Montvale, NJ) jumper gave Marist the 15-14 lead that they would never relinquish. During the last 11 minutes of the first half, the Red Foxes went on a 20-2 run during which six different players scored. Marist took a confident 29-16 lead into the halftime break after shooting 44.8% from the field and holding Rider to just 23.1% shooting.
Katie Hall opened up the half with a jumper for Rider but Marist senior Megan Vetter (Havertown, PA) answered with a three to put the Foxes up 32-18. It was all Marist for the rest of the half, as the Foxes rolled offensively. Katie Hall pulled Rider within 12 at the 11:49 mark, 40-28 before two Stephanie Youdath (Mentor, OH) free-throws started a 17-4 Marist run. The Red Foxes held a 57-32 lead before Tami Coyle drained a three with 6:22 left in the game for what would be Rider's last basket of the day. Marist struggled offensively in the closing minutes, but four straight points by sophomore Shannon Minter (Ossining, NY) sealed the win.
The Red Foxes shot an impressive 14-14 from the free throw line, their best output of the season. Every Marist player saw action in today's game, with 10 different players scoring and 12 grabbing at least one rebound. The Foxes dominated the boards, picking up 54 rebounds to Rider's 29. Kristin Keller (Poughkeepsie, NY) tied with Moore for a game-high 14 points while tallying eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal. Youdath finished the night with six points and eight boards while Vetter tallied nine points and five rebounds for Marist.
Moore was Rider's high-scorer with 14, while Hall and Coyle each picked up five rebounds apiece.
With her eight rebounds, Keller moved into 10th place on Marist's All-Time Career Rebounds list and now has 488 for her career. The Red Foxes improved to 9-6 overall,
3-3 in the MAAC while Rider dropped to 4-11 (2-4). Marist plays again on Thursday, Jan. 20 when the team travels to Fairfield for a 7:30 tip.
