Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Marist women's swimming and diving team (8-2) defeated visiting Southern Connecticut State today by a 126-115 margin in the 2005 home finale. Freshman swimmer Jamie Falco and diving classmate Melissa Mangona each won two events to lead the Red Foxes to their fifth consecutive home victory, dating back to last season.
Falco picked up her wins in the 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke, finishing with times of 2:12.53 and 2:12.23, respectively. The 200 backstroke was a clean sweep for Marist, as junior Karen Fleckenstein and sophomore Ashley Papuga took second and third.
Mangona won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving platforms with scores of 244.65 and 238.80, respectively. Junior Meghan Duffy was second and sophomore Anna Sanner third in each event.
Sophomore Kimberly Koehler won the 50 freestyle in 26.02 seconds, edging out classmate Victoria Fresolone by four-tenths of a second. The duo was also second and third in the 100 freestyle with Koehler finishing .89 seconds ahead. Sophomore Lauren Malski also earned a victory for the Red Foxes, taking the 200 breaststroke in 2:27.19.
Both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays swam to victory as the medley squad of Falco, Malski, freshman Whitney Butler and Koehler won in 1:52.59 and the freestyle relay that consisted of sophomore Jessica Paul, Fresolone, Fleckenstein and Heslin touched first in 1:45.03.
A pre-meet ceremony was held to honor the four Marist seniors competing for the final time at the McCann Center Natatorium: Katie Szajowski, Sarah McKinney, Jennifer Gelsomino and Heslin.
The Red Foxes are back in action Saturday, Jan. 29 at Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC). The meet begins at 12 p.m.
