Jan. 21, 2005

Final Stats

Bridgeport, CT - Marist's Fifi Camara (Conakry, Guinea) and Kristin Keller (Poughkeepsie, NY) were each just one rebound shy of a double-double, tallying 18 and 15 points, respectively, to lead Marist to a 65-50 win over Fairfield. The Red Foxes went on a 22-6 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half to pull ahead 48-29 en route to the victory. With the win, the Red Foxes extended their winning streak to four games, taking their record to 10-6 (4-3 MAAC) while Fairfield fell to 4-12 (2-5 MAAC). The win was Marist's fourth-straight double-digit win in the past week and a half.

Marist scored the first four points of the game before Fairfield drained seven straight to take the lead at the 16:58 mark. The two teams traded buckets and the Stags went up as many was 17-13 off a Sabra Wrice jumper before back-to-back three pointers from a pair of Marist point guards in Nikki Flores (Montvale, NJ) and Alisa Kresge (Holmdel, NJ) put the Foxes up 19-17.

Marist maintained the lead until the 2:01 mark when Janelle McManus hit a jumper to put Fairfied up 23-22. Sarah Smrdel (Mentor, OH) nailed a jumper off a feed from Keller to give Marist the one-point lead before Kresge ended scoring for the half and put the Foxes up 25-23 after a trip to the free-throw line. Marist shot a struggling 29.4% from the field in the first half, though Fairfield was not much sharper, at 34.5%.

Eight straight points by four different Marist players opened the half on an 8-0 run for the Red Foxes, starting the eventual 22-6 run in the opening 10 minutes of the half. Marist held a 48-29 lead at the 10:44 mark, capped by a Shannon Minter (Ossining, NY) layup. Camara drained nine of her 18 points during that Marist run while Keller tallied six. A 9-0 mini-run over the next two minutes, including four points from Wrice, pulled Fairfield within 10, at 48-38. Megan Vetter (Havertown, PA) quickly answered back and drained a three to put the Foxes back up by 13. Vetter's three would spark an 11-2 Marist run, during which Keller picked up four points and Marist gained a lead of 19 at the 4:20 mark, 59-40.

The Foxes held on in the closing minutes to take the eventual 15-point win. 10 different Red Foxes were in the points column for the day while seven different players contributed to Marist's 15 steal tally. Marist shot a much-improved 53.3% from the field, good for 40.6% shooting on the night.

Camara's 18 points and nine rebounds would lead all players while Keller added nine boards, five assists, two blocks and a steal to her 15 points for a solid all-around effort. Tonight's game marked the 15th time in 16 games that Camara has scored in the double-digits for Marist. Vetter finished the night with nine points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals while Kresge had a career high 11 assists to go along with four points, three steals and just one turnover. Kresge now leads the MAAC with a 4.09 assist to turnover ratio in conference play.

McManus put forth a valiant effort for the Stags, tallying 16 points along with three rebounds while Candice Lindsay came off the bench to pick up 10 points and Wrice finished with eight boards.

The Lady Red Foxes will return to action on Saturday when they host Manhattan in game-one of a double-header with the men at 5:00 p.m. at the McCann Center.
