POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Sophomore Jared Jordan scored a career-high 32 points and dished out eight assists in a losing effort as Marist fell to visiting Iona 96-85 Friday evening in the McCann Center. Iona improved to 8-11 overall and 4-5 in the MAAC with the win, while Marist dropped to 10-8 overall and 7-2 in the league.
Steve Burtt led six Gaels in double figures with 24 points, while Ricky Soliver (17), Greg Jenkins (16), Kiril Wachsmann (13), Marvin McCullough (12) and Charles Henson (10) also chipped in double digits.
Marist was without the services of 6-9 senior center Will McClurkin, who was suspended by the school earlier in the evening for a violation of institutional and department policy.
The game was a seesaw affair in the first 18 minutes until the Gaels broke on top with a jumper from Jenkins at the 2:14 mark of the first half to take a 31-30 lead. The Gaels would never look back and built their lead out to as many 16 on four separate occasions, the last time on a 3-pointer by Burtt with 3:38 to play to make the score 71-55. The Red Foxes could get no closer than seven the rest of the way.
Brandon Ellerbee, making his first appearance for Marist since displacing a tendon in his right pinky finger in the 74-58 win over St. Bonaventure scored 17 points on 5-7 shooting from 3-point range. Will Whittington also tossed in 16, while redshirt freshman Ryan Stilphen recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Marist nipped Iona in the shooting category by shooting 43.9 percent (25-for-57), to Iona's 43.5 percent (27-for-62). The Red Foxes also hit 11 3-pointers on the evening, while Iona connected on just 30.8 percent (4-for-13) from beyond the arc. A big difference in the game came at the free throw line as Iona made 38 of 50 free throw attempts (76.0), while Marist made 68.6 percent (24-for-35).
Iona won the battle on the glass by a margin of 45-33. McCullough recorded seven to lead the Gaels, while Stilphen's 10 boards were tops for Marist.
The Red Foxes will next head to St. Peter's on Monday for a 7:30 p.m. tip. That game will represent the first of a stretch of seven games in which the Red Foxes will play six on the road.
