New York, N.Y. - Led by record-breaking and IC4A-qualifying performances, the Marist men's track team had its best finish in school history at the 68th annual Metropolitan Intercollegiate Track Championships, which concluded late Sunday night at the New Balance Armory Track and Field Center. The Red Foxes finished in seventh place out of 14 teams with 50 points. The point total and team placement is the highest in school history.

The distance medley relay team placed first overall and qualifyed for the IC4A Championships in March. The team of sophomores Bryan Quinn, Brian DeMarco, Mike Bamberger and senior Geoff Decker took top honors in 10:19.37, narrowly getting under the IC4A standard of 10:19.80.

DeMarco seized control of the relay with a scintillating 400-meter leg of 49.8 seconds. This relay split came a few hours after DeMarco lowered his own school record in the 400-meter dash, finishing sixth in 50.40 seconds, despite getting gashed in the leg with another runner's spike in the late stages of the race. Bamberger extended the distance medley relay lead with an 800-meter split time of 1:54.4.

There were several other personal-best and noteworthy performances at the meet. In the 3000 meters, all three Marist entrants ran personal-best times. Senior Steve Hicks led the way with a second-place finish in 8:40.25. Sophomore Mark Fernandez was fifth in 8:47.19 while freshman Brandon Cartica placed 10th in 8:55.73.

In the 5000 meters, freshman Mike Rolek came in third in 15:56.38. Sophomore Matt Syzmaszek placed fourth in 16:00.56 and junior Mike Schab was sixth in 16:04.04.

The 60-meter dash saw junior David Snell make his Marist track debut with a sixth-place finish in 7.23 seconds, just 0.01 off the school record held by junior Rob DeAngelo. DeAngelo, coming off an injury, was seventh in 7.30 seconds.

The men's track team returns to action Friday at the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden. It is the first time a Marist team will be represented at the venerable event.
