POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Senior Will McClurkin and redshirt freshman Ryan Stilphen notched double doubles as Marist defeated two-time MAAC champion Manhattan 71-62 Sunday afternoon in the James J. McCann Center. The Red Foxes moved to 6-7 overall and 3-1 in the league with the win, while Manhattan fell to 6-5 overall and 1-2 with the loss.
The Marist tandem combined for 23 points and 21 rebounds, powering the Red Foxes to a 43-29 advantage on the glass.
Sophomore Will Whittington led the Red Foxes with 19 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field and a 7-for-8 effort from the line. Classmate Jared Jordan also posted 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Manhattan was led by Peter Mulligan's 14 points, while Mike Konovelchick and C.J. Anderson went for 13 and 12, respectively.
The first half was an even affair for the most part with both teams shooting 34.4 percent (11-for-32) from the field. However, Manhattan failed to capitalize on 13 3-point attempts, knocking down just one over the game's first 20 minutes. The Jaspers took a six-point lead at the 1:14 mark on a jumper by Mulligan, but the Red Foxes got a pair of McClurkin free throws and a Carl Hood jumper to close to within two (28-26) at the break.
The Red Foxes came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, going on a 13-3 run over 4:11 to stake themselves to a six-point (39-33) advantage with 14:48 left in the affair. Marist eventually built that lead out to an 11-point advantage at the 5:29 mark on a 3-pointer by Whittington, the nation's leader in 3-pointers per game. Manhattan came right back with a 12-3 run, however, to pull within a basket at 64-62 with just one minute left on a tip-in by Konovelchick. The Jaspers tried valiantly to score the tying basket but were snowed under by seven Whittington free throws in the contest's final 57 seconds to fall to their second MAAC loss.
Marist shot 42.9 percent (21-for-49) from the field, while Manhattan was 39.7 percent (23-for-58). The Red Foxes connected on 37.5 percent (6-for-16) from long range, while the Jaspers went 5-for-21 (23.8 percent). Despite their late run, the Red Foxes continued to struggle from the free throw line, shooting 23-for-34 (67.6 percent) for the contest. The Jaspers had issues of their own from the charity stripe, going 11-for-18 (61.1 percent).
The Red Foxes will be back in action Wednesday, January 12th when they head down to Baltimore, Md. to take on Loyola (MD) at 7 p.m.
