POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- It took 13 tries but the Marist Women's Swimming and Diving team defeated Fordham for the first time on Thursday night 128-113. The Red Foxes were led by Jackie Fountaine (Pawling, N.Y.) and Jamie Falco (North Haven, Conn.) who both won two events each.
Fountaine took the top position in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:23.22 and the 50-yard freestyle in 24.96 seconds. Falco, off a strong performance at the Army Invitational, took first place in the 200-yard individual medley as well as the 200-yard backstroke in 2:11.31 and 2:08.42, respectively. Freshman Sandra Bujalski (Thomaston, Conn.) was also an individual winner for Marist in the 100-yard freestyle, posting a time of 54.28 seconds.
In relay events the team of Falco, Fountaine, Bujalski and Kim Koehler (Narragansett, R.I.) took first place in the 400-yard medley relay, posting a time of 3:57.61. In the 400-yard freestyle relay Savannah Puca (Huntington, N.Y.), Jess Paul (Meadowbrook, Pa.), Kelsea Fortner (Mystic, Conn.) and Karen Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) took third place in a time of 3:47.41.
Marist also had a strong night on the diving board as the Red Foxes swept the one and three meter events. Anna Sanner (Somerset, Pa.) took the top spot in the 1-meter competition posting a score of 230.45. On the 3-meter board senior Meghan Duffy (Cheshire, Conn.) took first with a score of 253.65.
Following Thursday night's win Marist improves to 1-0 on the young season. They will be back in action on November 5 when they head to Lawrenceville, N.J. to take on MAAC foe Rider.
