POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Marist head baseball coach Dennis Healy announced Friday that Tag Montague has been hired as an assistant coach for the Red Foxes. Montague will be responsible for hitting instruction, Marist's infielders and catchers.
"We are thrilled Coach Montague joined the Marist baseball staff," said Healy. "His work ethic and baseball knowledge are unparalleled. His energy on and off the field carries over to the players and that is why he gets the most out of his players."
Montague comes to Marist after two seasons with the George Washington baseball team where he was in charge of hitting, team defense, infield play and assisted with recruiting. In 2003, Montague's hitters were among the nation's leaders in runs, slugging percentage, home runs and doubles.
He came to the Colonials from Virginia Wesleyan College where he served as the team's top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Montague's coaching was focused on instructing the hitters and the infielders. Prior to Wesleyan, he spent two seasons at Old Dominion University as the team's infield coach, hitting coach and third base coach.
In previous summers, Montague coached the Waynesboro Generals in the Shenandoah Valley League where he helped guide them to the 1998 championship while setting a league record for team batting average. He also coached the Outerbank Daredevils in the Coastal Plains league in the summer of 2000.
Montague played at Virginia Commonwealth where he hit .417 in 1991 against Sun Belt Conference opponents. In a game against Radford, he played all nine positions and recorded a save in the 3-0 VCU win. Prior to VCU, Montague played three years at Pfeiffer University, missing just one game. He was honored as the team's MVP his sophomore year. Montague attended Jr. Tucker High School in Richmond, where he helped guide the Tigers to back-to-back state championships.
Montague graduated from VCU in 1998 with a B.S. in physical education.
