RIVERDALE, N.Y.-Jason Wingate scored 33 points on 7-for-10 shooting, including 4-for-6 from 3-point range, to lead Manhattan to a 90-79 victory over visiting Marist at Draddy Gymnasium Friday evening in the MAAC opener for both schools. The Jaspers (1-4, 1-0 MAAC) picked up their first win of the season, while Marist dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.
The Red Foxes raced out to a 13-6 lead at the 16:30 mark on a layup by junior James Smith (Nyack, N.Y.), but were outscored 28-12 over the next 12:33 when Manhattan went up by nine (34-25) on a 3-pointer by Kenny Minor at the 3:57 mark. However, the Red Foxes mounted a mini-comeback during the balance of the stanza to pull to with three at the break.
Smith and Manhattan's Arturo Dubois led their respective squads with 10 points apiece in the first half, while Smith matched his season-high of eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Sophomore Shae McNamara (Milwaukee, Wisc.) set a new career-high with a pair of blocks in the first half. Junior Jared Jordan (Hartford, Conn.) had four first half assists to go over 300 for his career.
The Red Foxes shot an even 50 percent in the first half (13-for-26), while Manhattan tossed in 45.2 percent on 14-for-31 shooting.
Marist came out on a 10-2 run to begin the second half to take a five-point lead (43-38) on a 3-pointer by junior Will Whittington (Kingwood, Tx.) with 17:41 to go in the second half. However, Wingate drilled a 3-pointer with 12:56 remaining to put the Jaspers back on top for good 48-47.
Whittington led Marist with 18 points on 3-for-6 shooting from 3-point range. Smith posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out. Jordan also posted 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists, while redshirt sophomore Shae McNamara (Milwaukee, Wisc.) had 10.
C.J. Anderson had 16 points and eight rebounds for Manhattan, while Dubois and Jeff Xavier had 13 apiece to go with Kenny Minor's 12 points.
The Red Foxes outrebounded Manhattan 39-33.
Manhattan won the shooting battle, making 28-for-58 for 48.3 percent, while Marist put in 46.6 percent (27-for-58). The Jaspers made 61.5 percent of their 3-pointers (8-for-13), while Marist made 40.0 percent (8-for-20). Manhattan also made a higher percentage at the charity stripe (78.8 percent, 26-for-33) to Marist's 17-for-25 effort (68.0 percent).
The Red Foxes will be back in action Sunday at 4 p.m. in the second game of a doubleheader against unbeaten Iona (6-0 overall, 1-0 MAAC).
