Riverdale, NY -
The Marist women's basketball team picked up a 66-52 victory over Manhattan today at Draddy Gym. With the win, the Foxes improve to 19-6 (13-3 MAAC) while the Jaspers fall to 10-15 (6-10 MAAC). Senior Kristin Keller (Poughkeepsie, NY) had 22 points to lead all scorers while adding three blocks and two steals. This was the sixth time this season that Keller has scored more than 20 points, and the second time in the past two games.
Marist opened the game up on a 14-3 run that included three-straight treys, two from Fifi Camara (Conakry, Guinea). Caitlin Flood spurred the Jaspers on a 6-0 mini-run of their own to get back in the game and minutes later, a Lupe Godinez three pulled Manhattan within two, 16-14. Marist managed to keep the Jaspers at bay, as Megan Vetter (Havertown, PA) and Kristin Hein (Manasquan, NJ) each hit their first threes of the night in the closing minutes of the half to pull Marist ahead 27-21. Manhattan scored six points in just over a minute to come within three, but Camara put the Red Foxes up 30-27 at the half.
Vetter started off the second half with an emphatic three while Keller had back-to-back blocks on defense for the Foxes. Keller hit eight straight points to help jumpstart an 11-0 Marist run in which she converted two separate three-point plays. Hein hit her second three of the night to put the Red Foxes up 49-33 at 12:04. Joanna Nwafili stopped the bleeding for Manhattan with a layup, but Marist continued to pour it on offensively. Vetter drained another three at the 7:43 mark to give Marist the 54-38 lead that they would hold onto for the rest of the game. Manhattan's Serra Sangar had a late run that included eight points for the Jaspers, but they could not catch up to the Foxes.
Camara finished the day with 20 points and 10 rebounds, good for her 13th double-double of the season, a school record. Vetter tallied nine points along with four assists, a block and a steal in a solid day for the Red Foxes, while Alisa Kresge (Holmdel, NJ) had a game-high seven assists. Marist shot a sizzling 50% from three-point range and 48% from the field overall in the win. The Jaspers were held to just 33% shooting on the day and Flood led her team with 16 points and 12 boards.
The Red Foxes will be back in action on Friday when they host St. Peter's for a 7:00 p.m. matchup. Marist will honor its seniors, Keller, Vetter and Laura Whitney, before the game.
