POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Darnell Wilson, Kevin Downey and Chuck Harris all scored 17 points Sunday to lead the Canisius men's basketball squad to a 85-81 victory in the James J. McCann Center over Marist on Senior Night. Canisius improved to 10-17 overall and finished with a 8-10 MAAC record, while Marist fell to 11-16 overall and 8-10 in the MAAC as well. The two squads will meet again next Friday in the MAAC Tournament's first round in Buffalo, N.Y. at the HSBC Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Marist was led by 22 points and a career-high 15 rebounds from senior center Will McClurkin. Senior guard Pierre Monagan netted a career-high 21 points, while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out four assists. Sophomore Will Whittington added 18 points, while senior Brandon Ellerbee finished with 11.
Canisius shot a blistering 60 percent (21-for-35) in the first half, including 66.7 percent (6-for-9) from beyond the arc. Marist built an eight point lead in the first stanza (20-12, 13:49 mark) before surrendering a 13-3 run over 3:24 to take a two point lead at the 10:25 mark on a free throw by Wilson. The Red Foxes nudged back ahead moments later before the Golden Griffins closed the half on a 7-1 run to make the halftime margin 10 at 50-40.
The Red Foxes tried valiantly to claw their way back into the contest several times in the second half, closing to within one (72-71) at the 4:50 mark on a 3-pointer by Ellerbee. However, Dewitt Doss answered at the other end nine second later to push the lead back out to four. Ellerbee converted an offensive rebound down the stretch to pull Marist to within two (83-81) with 10 seconds left before Harris iced the game with two free throws with eight seconds left.
Canisius shot 49.2 percent (32-for-65) from the field, while Marist went 26-for-61 (42.6 percent). Both teams shot well from the 3-point line, with Canisius drilling 52.9 percent (9-for-17), while Marist nailed 10-for-20 attempts (50 percent), led by Monagan's 4-for-5 effort. Marist held the edge in the free throw department making 19-for-27 (70.4 percent), while Canisius went 12-for-18 (66.7 percent).
Canisius outrebounded the Red Foxes 42-34, led by Wilson's 11.
