Pittsburgh, Pa. - Senior co-captain Matthew Castillo was named the 2005 ECAC Swimmer of the Meet as the Marist Red Foxes men's squad placed second at the ECAC Championships. Castillo won a gold, silver and a bronze medal over the three-day competition.
Castillo, who won the 200 freestyle yesterday and took second in the 200 individual medley on Day 1, completed the trifecta with a third-place finish in the 200 breaststroke today in a time of 2:05.62. The Jamaica, N.Y. native, who won this event at the MAAC Championships last weekend, also swam with junior Kevin Connors, sophomore Patrick Collins and senior co-captain Jeffrey Paul to fourth place in the 400 freestyle relay (3:06.58).
Paul also placed fourth in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 46.41 seconds. Sophomore Daniel Garaffa was fourth in the 200 backstroke (1:52.91) while classmate Brandon Youse placed 15th (1:56.76).
Marist also had strong depth in the 200 butterfly and the 1650 freestyle. In the former event, junior Joseph Pilewski placed ninth in 1:53.31 to win the B final while Connors immediately followed him in 10th in 1:53.79 and sophomore Nick Chevalier was 13th in 1:54.58. The 1650 freestyle saw freshman Ralph Rienzo take 10th place in a time of 16:25.08 while Chevalier was 16th in 16:49.28.
The Red Foxes completed the meet with 363 points, trailing only Rider (415 points). Harvard and Seton Hall placed third and fourth, respectively.
The team completes the 2004-05 season with a 9-2 record, 6-0 in the MAAC. Marist won the conference championship for the ninth time in its 10 years in the MAAC.
