LAFAYETTE, La.-Joe Sargent blasted his first home run of the season, while Travis Musolf had a two-RBI triple in the fourth inning to power Marist to its first win of the season in a 7-5 victory over Miami University Sunday.
Marist (1-2) struck for one run in the top of the first inning off Miami freshman Connor Graham (Bowling Green, Ohio). The Red Foxes led off the inning with an infield single by Musolf, who came into score after a two-out error by freshman third baseman Evan Armitage.
Junior Paul Frietch atoned for Armitage's error in the bottom half of the first with a two-out run-scoring single off the right field wall, plating senior John Slone all the way from first base, evening the score, 1-1.
In his first collegiate outing, Graham went 3.2 innings and gave up five runs on six hits. He was replaced by freshman Matt Erwood who retired the only batter he faced in the fourth, stranding a runner on third.
Armitage cut the Marist lead to 5-2 with an RBI-groundout to first base with one out in the bottom of the fifth before Slone doubled down the left field line to score junior Jason Brown who singled and advanced to second on Armitage's ground ball to the right side.
Another Miami freshman made his collegiate debut on Sunday as John Ely relieved Erwood in the seventh with one out and a runner on third base. Erwood tossed 1.2 innings of relief and allowed one unearned run. That run scored when Ely surrendered a single to Pat Feeney, scoring Keith Brachold from third base to make the score 6-3 in favor of the Red Foxes.
In the bottom of the seventh, Slone knocked in sophomore Ryne Robinson from third base with a sacrifice fly to right, advancing Brown to third, who later scored on a pinch-hit single to left by junior Will Reynolds, making it 6-5.
Ely kept the RedHawks within one in the top of the eighth inning as he worked his way out of a one-out jam with runners on second and third, logging a pair of strikeouts to end the inning and keep the score 6-5.
The RedHawks surrendered another run in the top half of the ninth forcing them to attempt come from behind in the ninth for the third consecutive game. Junior Eric Radley hit a one-out double off the left field wall to bring Slone to the plate as the game-tying run. Slone lined out to center field and Reynolds struck out to end the game.
Freshman Tom Close gave up a pair of runs in four innings of relief of starter George Heath to pick up his first career victory. Feeney also picked up a pair of stolen bases in addition to an RBI to contribute to the Red Foxes offensive attack.
Marist will next head to New Orleans, La. next weekend for a three-game series with the nation's top-ranked team, Tulane.
