RADFORD, Va. - Senior pitcher Mark Fleisher did not allow an earned run and went 3-of-4 at the plate to help Radford to a 12-3 non-Conference baseball win over Marist on Saturday at Dedmon Center Park.
The Highlanders collected 16 hits, with left fielder Jonathan Spears joining Fleisher with three hits (3-for-3). Fleisher, Spears, third baseman Jesse Ross and centerfielder Steve Mignogna each had two RBI. Ross, Mignogna, and first baseman Kellen Wohlford added two hits apiece.
Fleisher (2-2) earned the victory by throwing six complete innings, allowing two runs, neither of which was earned on six hits. Righty Casey Hodges picked up his first save of the season, throwing three innings and allowing just three hits and one run.
RU (3-11) scored the first run of the game when Fleisher's single to left drove in Wohlford. The Red Foxes (1-9) scored one run in both the second and third innings to take a 2-1 lead. Designated hitter Kevin Grauer singled to right, scoring second baseman Joe Sargent in the second, and catcher Bryan Towler's RBI single in the third scored shortstop Andy Kirakedes. Radford retook the lead in the fourth on a double to right that scored Spears and catcher Nate Toth.
Fleisher singled in the fifth to score Wohlford and then crossed the plate on a Ross double for another run. Ross scored when Toth reached on an error by the shortstop, completing the three-run fifth. The Highs added one more in the sixth when Mignogna scored after Wohlford reached on a passed ball strikeout. Marist added a run in the seventh on an RBI double by right fielder Keith Brachold that scored centerfielder Travis Musolf.
RU exploded for five insurance runs in the eighth to secure the win. Ross doubled, scoring Wohlford. Spears then singled to drive in Fleisher and Ross. Shortstop Ben Toth then singled to left center, socing Spears and right fielder Matt Mantione.
Chambers (0-3) took the loss for the Red Foxes, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits in four innings pitched. Towler, Grauer and left fielder Thomas Ciccarone each were 2-for-4 at the plate, with Grauer and Towler collecting one RBI each.
The teams will resume the series with a doubleheader Sunday at Noon.
