Final Stats
Poughkeepsie, NY -
Senior attack Lauren Serge (Albany, NY) racked up four goals along with five groundballs to lead the Red Foxes against Sacred Heart tonight, but the Pioneers offense proved too much for Marist to combat. Katie Salamone powered Sacred Heart team with five goals, with two of her teammates also recording hat tricks.
Salamone put Sacred Heart on the board just 30 seconds into the contest but Marist senior captain Christine Connell (Westbury, NY) evened the score less than a minute later. Salamone then converted back-to-back goals to jumpstart a 4-0 Pioneer run, resulting in a 5-1 lead. Freshman Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, NY) jumpstarted the Marist offense with a free-position goal, followed quickly by another free position winner by Serge. The Pioneers then went on a fiery five-goal run before Marist's Jessica O'Brien (Wantagh, NY) scored a goal with just four seconds left in the half, taking the score to 10-4, Sacred Heart at the break.
Natalie Smith kicked off the attack in the second for the Pioneers scoring two quick goals with a Red Fox point in between by Serge. The teams would continue to trade goals for the balance of the second half, with Marist senior Francesca DeLorenzo (Nyack, NY) sparking the Red Foxes with two goals. JoAnn Montesarchio, Sacred Heart's leading scorer, had back-to-back goals to help stall Marist's offensive comeback.
Serge's hat trick paced the Marist offense while Diener finished the night with two goals, one assist, eight groundballs and three draw controls. Senior Patricia Leahy (New Hyde Park, NY) paced the Marist defense with five groundballs while DeLorenzo had two goals along with four groundballs on the afternoon. Freshman Liz Burkhard (Wantagh, NY) played the bulk of the minutes in goal for Marist, recording eight saves and two caused turnovers.
Sacred Heart's Maggie Brauer recorded 10 saves in goal for the Pioneers, while five different players had at least two goals, led by Salamone (five) and Montesarchio (four). Brianna Bubeck raked in five groundballs to pace the defense.
The Red Foxes will be back in action on Saturday when they host MAAC foe Canisius at 1:00 p.m. on Leonidoff Field.
