April 16, 2005

New York, N.Y. - The Marist men's track and field team posted its highest finish and point total in school history at the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Outdoor Track Championships, which concluded Saturday at St. John's University. The Red Foxes finished in seventh place out of 14 teams with a total of 45.5 points.

Freshman Shae McNamara paced Marist with a victory in the high jump. McNamara, who is also a member of the men's basketball team, was the only jumper in the competition to clear 1.94 meters.

The 1,600-meter relay team of sophomore Mike Bamberger, sophomore Bryan Quinn, sophomore Patrick Carroll and sophomore Brian DeMarco placed third in 3:23.46, just one-tenth of a second slower than the school record set at the 2004 Penn Relays. Other third-place finishers for the Red Foxes included sophomore Mark Fernandez in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:58.97) and junior Bryan VanSteenbergen in the javelin (45.72 meters).

Senior Clayton Berry placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 13.18 meters and improved his personal-best in the discus with a ninth-place toss of 37.93 meters.

In the 10,000-meter run, held on a windy Friday night at Rutgers, sophomore Matt Syzmaszek (33:07.0) and freshman Ted Marak (33:27.5) both ran personal-record times. Syzmaszek finished in sixth place, while Marak was ninth.

Sophomore Chris Baum was sixth in the 3,000 steeplechase in a personal-best time of 10:11.47, and sophomore Matt Walsh ran a personal-best in the 1,500-meter run (4:12.52).

The Red Foxes return to action Friday at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton.
