April 19, 2005

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Marist's Robert Ryan picked up a two-inning save Tuesday to lead the Red Foxes to a 6-5 victory over visiting Hartford at the McCann Baseball Field. Marist improved to 14-15 overall with the win, while Hartford fell to 4-14.

The Red Foxes' Tom Close evened his record at 3-3, lasting six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. He also struck out eight batters, while surrendering just one walk. Hartford's John Coury (1-1) took the loss, giving up five earned runs on four hits in just 1.1 innings. He also walked three batters.

Marist was led at the plate by third baseman Travis Musolf and second baseman Kevin Grauer, who each had two base hits. Right fielder Keith Brachold and designated hitter Justin Lepore had two RBI apiece. Musolf and shortstop Andy Kiriakedes also chipped in a pair of runs scored. The Hawks were led by right fielder Steve Moyer's three hits. Center fielder Kyle O'Neill also led Hartford with a two runs scored.

Hartford jumped on Close early with three runs in the top of the first. The Hawks strung together five consecutive singles by first baseman Ryan Cuscovitch, third baseman Luke Trahan, left fielder Adam Bowser, Moyer and catcher Craig Vincellette to account for the runs.

Marist answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning when Justin Lepore sacrifice fly to right scored both Musolf and Kiriakedes. Kiriakedes raced home when Vincellette cut off the throw home and attempted to nail the Marist shortstop at third, only to have the throw sail wide of its mark.

It looked as if the Red Foxes were prepared to blow the affair wide open when they sent four more runners across the plate in the bottom of the second. Musolf plated second baseman Joe Sargent with the first run of the inning on a single to left field, while Brachold's long double over O'Neill's head sent Musolf and Grauer home for his team-leading 21st and 22nd RBI of the season. Lepore recorded another RBI on yet another sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Kiriakedes.

The Hawks would register their other tallies in the fifth and seventh innings. Second baseman Bill Perry delivered the RBI single in the fifth, while Cuscovitch scored O'Neill from second on an RBI-groundout in the top of the seventh.

After Marist relievers Erik Supplee and Kevin Kelly got the Red Foxes through the seventh inning, Marist coach Joe Raccuia called on Ryan to nail down his fifth save of the season. The hard-throwing righthander struck out two and walked three over the final two frames.

Musolf stole his team-leading 16th and 17th bases.

Marist will be back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader against St. Peter's, beginning at noon in Jersey City, N.J.
