Kingston, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team (1-4, 1-1 MAAC) made a valiant comeback effort tonight at Dietz Stadium in Kingston but fell to conference rival Manhattan 11-10. Junior midfielder Tim Iuculano was the game's high scorer with five goals.
The Red Foxes, down 4-0 less than six minutes into the game, got on the board with 7:26 left in the first quarter as junior midfielder Bill Duerr scored an extra-man goal, assisted by sophomore midfielder Mike McGuire. Iuculano scored three goals in the first half, including a man-up goal 41 seconds before intermission that brought Marist within 9-6 at the half.
Iuculano and freshman attackman Pat Van Hall would find the net late in the third period to bring the Red Foxes even closer. Kushner's first goal of the season, scored on a breakaway, came with four seconds left in the period and brought Marist within 10-8.
Iuculano tossed in his fifth goal, assisted by junior midfielder Ryan Blaney, with 9:38 remaining as the Red Foxes cut the Jasper lead to 10-9. Manhattan's Justin Otto would put the game away, however, at the 3:38 mark. Van Hall scored his second goal of the game 37 seconds later to make it 11-10 but the Jaspers (3-4, 2-0 MAAC) would successfully run out the clock from there.
Duerr finished with three goals and an assist while Van Hall also had an assist. McGuire had two assists. Eugene Tanner had three goals for Manhattan while Otto had two. Chris Oppito tallied two goals and an assist.
Junior Stephen Gravino made six saves in the cage for the Red and White. Justin Henry made five for the Jaspers.
Marist is back in action Thursday, April 7 for a 12:30 p.m. contest against MAAC Lacrosse League foe Canisius at Leonidoff Field.
