Box Score
Emmitsburg, Md. - Junior midfielder Tim Iuculano scored his third goal of the game and team-leading 27th of the season with 2:53 remaining in the first overtime period to give the Marist men's lacrosse team (5-6, 4-2 MAAC) an 11-10 win over host Mount St. Mary's (6-7, 5-1 MAAC). The native of Silver Spring, Md. also had two assists in the victory.
Mount St. Mary's controlled play early, taking a 3-0 lead into the second quarter. Junior attackman Andrew Walsh got the Red Foxes on the board with 9:05 left in the first half, taking a pass from midfielder classmate Bill Duerr and putting a shot past goalie Dan Whitehurst.
After another Mount goal gave the home team a 4-1 lead with 8:21 left in the second quarter, Marist roared back with four unanswered goals before halftime to take a 5-4 lead at the break. Iuculano had a hand in all four, scoring two of the goals while assisting sophomore midfielder Mike McGuire and senior co-captain Patrick Van Horne on the others.
Van Horne gave the Red Foxes a two-goal advantage with a Walsh-assisted goal early in the third period. Following two Mountaineer scores that tied the game 6-6, Marist put on another spurt, this one three goals, to bring a 9-6 lead into the fourth quarter. Duerr had a goal and an assist in the three-goal run.
Mount St. Mary's refused to go quietly, however, scoring three straight of their own to knot the score at 9-9 with 10:45 left. Junior midfielder Ryan Blaney scored the second of his two goals at the 9:02 mark, but the lead was short-lived as Mount's Jason Werner scored his team-high third goal with 7:41 to play.
In a frenetic last minute of regulation, Marist junior goalie Stephen Gravino saved a Billy Jautze shot with 58 seconds left and started the counterattack. Last-second shots by Duerr and Iuculano went wide, however, sending the game into the extra period.
The Marist defense forced a turnover with 3:29 left in overtime and cleared the ball before head coach Andrew Copelan called a timeout at the 3:20 mark to set up a play. The maneuver was successful, as 27 seconds later, Iuculano worked himself free and fired the ball past Whitehurst for the victory.
The 11 goals were the most the Red Foxes have scored in a win this year while the team's six assists were a season-high.
Gravino made 11 saves while his counterpart Whitehurst had 13.
The Red Foxes return home to face MAAC rival Siena at Leonidoff Field on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
