Box Score

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team (2-4, 2-1 MAAC) earned a 10-6 win over visiting conference foe Canisius today in the home opener at Leonidoff Field. Junior midfielder Bill Duerr tallied four goals and an assist to lead Marist to the win.

The Red Foxes jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as senior attackman Patrick Van Horne scored his first goal of the year just 1:14 into the contest. Later in the period, junior attackman Andrew Walsh scored as Marist took a 2-0 lead into the second quarter.

Immediately following a penalty on Canisius's Matt Hajek for an illegal stick at the start of the second quarter, Duerr converted the extra-man opportunity into his 14th goal, assisted by classmate Ryan Blaney. After a Canisius score with 9:24 left in the half, Duerr would score for a second time with 3:38 remaining. The Golden Griffins struck back with two late goals and halftime found the Red Foxes leading 4-3.

Dan Carey and Stephen Ola each scored early in the third quarter to give Canisius its only lead at 5-4, but Marist would tie the game at five with 6:31 left in the period when Van Horne took a pass from Duerr and scored the Red and White's second man-up goal of the game.

Less than two minutes later, Iuculano scored his 14th goal of the season to give the Red Foxes a lead they would not relinquish. Senior co-captain Dan Kushner scored his first goal of the season on a man-down breakaway to put Marist ahead 7-5 after three quarters.

Duerr tossed in two more goals in the fourth quarter, the first of which was assisted by Van Horne, and Iuculano capped the afternoon with his second goal with 4:53 remaining.

Junior Stephen Gravino made six saves for the Red Foxes while Thomas Kucharczak, who was peppered with 43 shots, recorded 14 saves for the Griffs (3-2, 2-1 MAAC).

Marist returns to action on Saturday, traveling to 20th-ranked Fairfield for a 1 p.m. contest.
