Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score
RIVERDALE, N.Y.- Chris Tracz went all seven innings in the second game of the doubleheader as the Marist baseball squad knocked off Manhattan 3-1 in the second half of the twinbill Saturday. Manhattan's Chris Cody pitched a gem of his own in the first game, shutting out the Red Foxes for nine innings on the mound.
In game one, the Jaspers broke a scoreless tie in the fourth, as freshman Nunzio Franzese doubled home sophomore Nick Derba, who had singled earlier in the frame. Franzese then found his way home without the benefit of a hit, advancing to third on a wild pitch, and scoring on a passed ball to put Manhattan ahead, 2-0.
Cody made those runs stand up, as the junior lefthander threw no-hit ball after the fourth, only allowing three walks in the last five innings.
After freshman Matt Rizzotti singled to begin the sixth, Fitzpatrick hit his fourth home run of the season, sending the ball high over the 365 foot mark in left-center field, lifting Manhattan to a 4-0 lead.
The Jaspers put up another crooked number in the seventh, loading the bases with three walks. After Rizzotti singled home one run, Fitzpatrick's sacrifice fly brought home another, and Derba singled to left to bring home the third run of the inning and put Manhattan up, 7-0.
After Franzese hit his second double of the game in the eighth, senior Phil Kuhner hit a sacrifice fly to bring him home and end the scoring for Manhattan on the day, lifting the Jaspers to an 8-0 edge.
Derba (3-4, one RBI), Fitzpatrick (2-4, three RBI), Maser (2-3), Rizzotti (2-5, one RBI) and Franzese (2-4, two runs scored) all had mutliple-hit days for Manhattan, while Cody (4-0) went all nine innings, allowing only four hits, four walks, while striking out seven. Erik Supplee (2-2) went five-plus innings, allowing four runs and seven hits for Marist.
The Jaspers got on the board first in game two, after loading the bases in the second inning with nobody out. However, Tracz escaped the jam for Marist, getting a double play which brought home a run and a comebacker to end the inning and keep Manhattan at bay.
After getting only two hits through the first three innings, Marist broke through in the fourth against Jasper starter Josh Santerre. Justin Lepore singled home Thomas Ciccarone to knot the score at one. And the next batter, Joe Sargent, then wrapped a home run around the left field foul pole, putting Marist ahead, 3-1.
Tracz settled down after allowing the first three batters to reach in the second, retiring the next 11 Manhattan hitters before John Maser lined one off Tracz's foot, reaching on an infield single, to begin the sixth. However, Maser was quickly erased on a double play, and the Jaspers were held at bay from there.
Santerre (1-2) went the distance, allowing three runs, two earned, and scattering seven hits over seven innings. Tracz (3-3) also pitched all seven innings for Marist, only allowing three hits and one walk, while striking out three.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow, Sunday, April 10, in a single game beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Van Cortlandt Park.
