HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.-Right fielder Keith Brachold launched his fifth homer of the season, while sophomore reliever Bobby Hastry recorded his first career win as Marist knocked off homestanding Hofstra 8-6 Tuesday afternoon. The Red Foxes improved to 21-16 overall with the win, while Hofstra fell to 18-27. The Red Foxes have now won 20 of their last 25 contests.
The Red Foxes jumped out to the early 1-0 lead scoring a run in the first. Third baseman Travis Musolf doubled to center and scored as shortstop Andy Kiriakedes singled up the middle.
The Pride struck in the third as designated hitter Matt Kougasian hit a two-RBI single to right field that scored Stewart, who walked, and Josh Stern, who hit an infield single, to make the score 2-1.
Marist put two more runs on the board in the fourth as Brachold and Bryan Towler hit back-to-back home runs to take the lead 3-2.
Hofstra answered in the bottom of the frame as third baseman Ricky Caputo slammed his ninth home run of the season to dead center to tie the score 3-3.
Marist came back in the fifth as second baseman Joe Sargent and center fielder Kevin Grauer hit back-to-back doubles, with Sargent coming home. Grauer then came home on a Kiriakedes single up the middle to make the score 5-3.
Stewart hit his 18th double of the season to right center in the bottom of the frame, advanced to third on a balk, and then scored on a Stern sacrifice fly-out to center. The Pride edged closer to Marist, 5-4.
Hofstra exchanged the lead with Marist again in the seventh as left fielder Pat Rogers doubled to left center, his first collegiate hit, and came home as Stewart smacked his fifth home run of the season to center, a two-run shot to give Hofstra the 6-5 lead.
Marist wouldn't go away in the eighth as designated hitter Kevin Buck singled and scored three batters later when Grauer singled to center. Left fielder Thomas Ciccarone followed it up scoring on a Caputo error to take the lead back, 7-6. The Red Foxes tacked on an additional run in the ninth as Kiriakedes reached base on a throwing error by Caputo, and scored two batters later as Towler singled to make it 8-6.
Dan Lux (0-1) took the loss for the Pride after leaving runners in scoring position in the eighth. He allowed two runs on three hits through 2.2 innings of work. Hastry (1-0) earned the win for the Red Foxes, entering the game in the seventh, while not allowing a hit through 1.2 innings of work. He struck out two batters. Robert Ryan nailed down his sixth save of the season, working the ninth and only yielding a walk with one strikeout.
Stewart went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate today with two walks, a single, his 18th double, and his fifth home run. Right fielder David Cole went 2-for-3.
Marist will be back in action Thursday for a home date with Stony Brook at 3:30 p.m.
