Lawrenceville, N.J. - The Marist women's track and field team is in third place and the men's team in fifth place after one day of competition at the MAAC Outdoor Championships at Rider University. Sophomore Rachel Watson and freshman Caitlin Garrity placed second and third, respectively, in the 10000 meters to lead Marist on Day 1.
Watson finished in 40:09.65 while Garrity crossed the finish line in 41:57.87 behind Iona's Salome Kosgei. Sophomore Bernice Patten and freshman Heidi Richards took fourth and fifth in that event while freshman Christine Snyder was seventh.
Senior Alison Keller and sophomore Christine McDevitt placed fourth and fifth in the long jump as senior Beth Ritchie rounded out the scoring pack with an eighth-place finish. Sophomore Nicole Donadio placed 12th. Junior Sheila Driscoll was seventh in the 5000 meters and sophomore Julianne Gadoury ninth.
On the men's side, senior Steve Hicks was fourth in the 10000 meters in a time of 32:07.73 while sophomore Mark Fernandez finished fourth in the 3000 steeplechase (9:47.75). Classmate Chris Baum took fifth in that event to also score points for Marist.
The remaining events, including all sprints, middle distance and relays, will be contested tomorrow.
