Whittington's 22 Leads Marist On Day One Of 2005 Empire State Games

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Rising junior Will Whittington (men's basketball) led the Marist contingent of 14 student athletes with 22 points Thursday in a 104-90 Hudson Valley victory over Long Island. Thursday was the first day of competition at the 2005 Empire State Games, hosted by the Hudson Valley.

Hudson Valley will face the Western Region team at 8 p.m. on Friday in the McCann Center.

Whittington's HV teammates, Fifi Camara and Julianne Viani (women's basketball) were also successful, topping the New York City squad 77-56. Camara tossed in 13 points, while Viani contributed nine. The duo will lead HV against the Long Island team at 4 p.m. on Friday at Vassar College.

Jesus Santos (men's diving) had a quality showing Thursday, standing fourth in the 1-meter competition (172.65) after five dives for Hudson Valley, while standing fifth on the 3-meter board (157.35). Teammate John Luboja is also competing in the 3-meter competition and stands ninth with a score of 133.05. The diving competition continues Friday.

In women's soccer action, Marist teammates Kristina Anderson and Jamie Witkiewicz powered Hudson Valley to a 5-0 win over New York City on Thursday. The pair will face an Adirondack squad at 1 p.m. on Friday at Stringham Park that features Marist assistant coach Erika Van Zandt. Van Zandt's club fell to the Western region team 2-1 on Thursday, with Van Zandt making 11 saves in net.

David Musinski (men's soccer), a 2005 Marist graduate, and his Hudson Valley team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to New York City on Thursday. Musinski's team faces Adirondack at 1 p.m. on Friday at Stringham Park

Kim McEathron (volleyball) and her Adirondack women's squad lost a pair of matches Thursday, first to the Western region team (17-25, 21-25, 12-15) and then to Long Island (23-25, 18-25, 12-15). Adirondack will face New York City at 11 a.m. and Hudson Valley at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Vassar Field House.

The crew competition (Michael Maurer, Rich McAvoy, Dan McAvoy) Thursday morning was postponed due to rough waters on the Hudson River. The competition will continue Friday.
