Marist Crew Trio Takes Silver Medal

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-The Marist men's crew trio of Dan McAvoy, Rich McAvoy and Michael Maurer took the silver medal in the men's open eight with a time of 7:23.40 Friday on the second day of competition at the 2005 Empire State Games. The medal is the first of any kind for any of the current or graduating Marist representatives in the Games.

Marist men's diver Jesus Santos finished just out of medal contention in the 1-meter competition, taking fourth overall with a score of 399.20. Santos currently stands fifth in the 3-meter competition, set to kick off at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in the McCann Center. John Luboja is currently ninth in the event. Marist head diving coach Melanie Bolstad will also take part in the synchronized diving finals Saturday evening at 9:15 p.m. with former Marist diver Sheila Nieri.

Fifi Camara and Julianne Viani (women's basketball) powered Hudson Valley to a 66-59 victory over Long Island in the Open Division. Camara tallied 15 points, 13 rebounds and two steals, while Viani poured in 14 points and one 3-pointer to pace the attack. Hudson Valley (2-0) will face the Central Division squad at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Vassar College.

2004 Marist men's soccer standout David Musinski netted a goal in the 88th minute of Hudson Valley's 2-0 victory over Adirondack to salt away the victory and even the squad's record a 1-1. The goal was Musinski's first of the Games and came on a 23-yard direct kick. Musinski and Hudson Valley will face the Central region team at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Stringham Park.

Marist assistant women's soccer head coach Erika Van Zandt got the best of two of her players Friday as she led her Adirondack team to a 4-0 defeat of Hudson Valley Friday, featuring Marist's Kristina Anderson and Jamie Witkiewicz. Hudson Valley dropped to 1-1 with the loss, while Adirondack improved to 1-1. On Saturday, Adirondack faces New York City at 1 p.m. at Stringham Park, while Hudson Valley's game follows at the same site against the Central team (4 p.m.).

Marist men's cross country newcomer Tom Williams finished ninth in the 10,000 meters (33:46.07), while Kim McEathron's (volleyball) Adirondack squad dropped to 0-4 with a pair of losses to New York City (23-25, 12-25, 8-15) and Hudson Valley (17-25, 21-25, 10-15).

Finally, Marist men's basketball standout Will Whittington struggled offensively in Hudson Valley's 75-60 loss to the Western region team on Friday, dropping the team's record to 1-1 overall. Whittington tossed in nine points in the game, including one 3-pointer. Hudson Valley will face Adirondack at 8 p.m. on Saturday in the McCann Center.

Lisa D'Aniello (women's track and field) will also be participating in the 400 hurdles and 800 meter run Saturday morning at Arlington High School. The 800 will start at 9:50 a.m., while the 400 hurdles is scheduled to start at 11:20 a.m.
