Queens, N.Y. -
Marist first-year women's soccer Head Coach Elizabeth Roper led her team to a 1-0 overtime victory over St. John's in her first game with the Red Foxes. Junior Justine Caccamo (Bohemia, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal at 92:10 off a feed from senior captain Kat Murray (Pleasanton, Calif.). Prior to the game, the Red Storm was ranked 14th in the Northeast. With the win, Marist moves to 1-0 on the season while St. John's drops to 0-1.
Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Nazarechuk (Ringwood, N.J.) kept the Red Foxes going in the first half, facing six shots from the Red Storm and making three big saves. Classmate Anna Case (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) took over goalkeeping duties in the second half and carried Marist through the overtime period. The two rookies combined for four saves and the shutout.
Kristina Anderson (Tomkins Cove, N.Y.) almost got the job done for Marist late in regulation but a big save by Rebecca Capinera preserved the stalemate. The Red Foxes' defense pressured the Red Storm for the entire contest, helping force two late shots to go wide. Senior captain Liz Egan (Shelton, Conn.) and sophomore Melanie Ondrejik (Manalapan, N.J.) were defensive rocks for Marist, playing the entire 92:10 minutes.
Just two minutes into the overtime period, Caccamo took a shot that was stopped by Capinera, but she quickly reacted to the rebounded ball and hammered home the game-winner.
All of Marist's field players saw action in the contest, with seven of them taking shots. Murray led the Red Foxes' attack with two shots and tallied the assist on Caccamo's winner. St. John's outshot Marist 12-8 with Kati Schantz and Holly Ryder each making three attempts. Goalkeepers Jaime Beran and Capinera combined for four saves in the loss.
The Red Foxes will be back in action on Aug. 31 when they travel to the University of Vermont for a 3:00 date with the Catamounts. They will be back in the Hudson Valley for a matchup with Army on Sept. 9 and play their home opener on Sept. 18 against Maine.
