Colchester, Vt. -
The Marist women's soccer team lost a tough contest to the University of Vermont this afternoon, 4-2. The game, originally scheduled at Vermont's Burlington campus, was moved to the turf field at St. Michael's College due to poor weather conditions. After Marist took an early 2-0 lead, the Catamounts caught up for a 2-2 tie at halftime before opening up a 4-2 lead in the second half.
Marist junior Justine Caccamo (Bohemia, N.Y.) continues her impressive play at forward, scoring both goals today. She has tallied all of the Red Foxes' goals so far this season. Today, she gave Marist an early 2-0 lead with back-to-back unassisted shots in the first 20 minutes of the game. At 15:07, Caccamo beat Vermont's Elana Cockburn one-on-one to put the Foxes up. Just over five minutes later, at 20:17, she beat the Catamounts' defense with a goal to the left.
The Vermont offense did not lie still for long, as Cass VanLeeuwen scored her first goal of the game off a cross from Amy Cochran at 24:26. Cochran got in on the scoring herself six minutes later off an assist from Jamie Koehnlein. The score remained tied at 2-2 going into the break. Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Nazarechuk (Ringwood, N.J.) had three saves in the first half for Marist.
The Catamounts struck again at 57:47 in the second as Koehnlein beat Marist's Anna Case (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) with a looping corner kick to give her team the 3-2 lead. The Red Foxes were unable to mount an attack in the second half. VanLeeuwen scored her second goal of the game at 84:25 to seal the win for Vermont. Case finished the half with two saves in net.
Vermont outshot Marist 18-17 and had nine corner kicks to the Red Foxes' five.
