POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Marist junior Will Whittington (Kingwood, Tx.) nailed a career and school record-tying eight 3-pointers in a 91-72 victory over Fairfield Friday evening in front of a national ESPNU audience at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes (10-6 overall and 4-4 in the MAAC) have won five straight and eight of their last 10. The Stags dropped to 5-11 overall and 3-5 in the league.
Whittington's eight 3's tied the school record set previously by himself at Siena earlier this season, Joey O'Connor against Loyola in the 1987-88 season and Manny Otero against Monmouth in the 1996-97 season.
Marist led the whole way, jumping out to a 3-0 lead behind 7'0 center James Smith's (Nyack, N.Y.) 10th 3-pointer of the season. After Fairfield sliced the lead to six in the first half (35-29) on a layup by DeWitt Maxwell at the 4:31 mark, Marist closed the balance of the stanza on a 16-2 run to take a 20-point (51-31) lead at the break.
The Red Foxes took their largest lead at 24 (55-31) just after halftime on a free throw at the 19:23 mark of the second half. The closest the Stags got the rest of the way was 12 (72-60) at the 9:05 mark on a 3-pointer by Jonathan Han.
Marist placed all of its starters in double figures for the third time this season, led by Whittington's 25 points. The Red Foxes also accomplished the feat at Lafayette and at Liberty. Junior Jared Jordan (Hartford, Conn.) posted 17 points and 12 assists for his second double-double of the season. The 6'2 guard came into the game second nationally with 7.9 assists per game.
Smith notched 18 points and a season-high 13 rebounds, while redshirt sophomore Ryan Stilphen (13 points, eight boards) and senior Carl Hood (Houston, Tx.) had 11 points.
Fairfield was led by 17 points apiece from Terrence Todd and Han. Maxwell also posted 12 points and led the Stags with seven rebounds. Han also chipped in six assists.
The Red Foxes notched 40 rebounds to Fairfield's 29, the seventh opponent Marist has outrebounded in the last eight games.
The Red Foxes finished the game 51.7 percent from the field (31-for-60), while Fairfield went 42.9 percent (27-for-63). Marist went 12-for-25 from 3-point range (48 percent), while the Stags went 35.7 percent (10-for-28). The Red Foxes also held the edge at the free throw line, going 17-for-22 (77.3 percent) to Fairfield's 61.5 percent (8-for-13).
Marist will finally have some time off until its next game, a Wednesday road date at Saint Peter's at 7 p.m. Both teams won their respective home games in the season series last season.
