Poughkeepsie, N.Y. -
The Marist women's basketball team defeated Rider, 75-49 in a game that featured 12 of 13 Red Foxes scoring at least two points. Marist (13-5/8-1 MAAC) put forth a true team effort to stifle the struggling Broncs (2-16/1-8 MAAC) and remain in first place in the MAAC. "It's a good win...overall it was a great team effort and it's nice to get a lot of people in the game," said Marist Head Coach Brian Giorgis.
The Broncs scored the first basket of the game, but that was all that would go their way for the remainder of the contest. Marist rattled off 16 consecutive points to take a 16-2 lead at 13:37. Rider later hit two consecutive threes to cut Marist's lead to 18-12 at 9:21, but that was the closest the team would come all night. The Foxes went on 13-1 run, talking a commanding 31-13 lead at 5:53. A three pointer by Nikki Flores (Montvale, N.J.) with two seconds left gave Marist a 43-21 lead at the break. Marist shot an impressive 63% from the field in the half.
The Foxes came out slow in the second half, but quickly got back into the swing of things, going on a 9-2 mini-run that included six points from Meg Dahlman (Spencerport, N.Y.) to go up 55-29 at 14:51. Marist continued to pour it on offensively to take its largest lead of the game, 32 points, up 63-31 at 9:45.
Coach Giorgis would soon sub freely, giving 13 of his player a chance to play at least four minutes. A jumper by Kristin Hein (Manasquan, N.J.) and a free-throw by Mary Alice Duff (Havertown, Pa.) kept the Foxes up 69-39 at 3:18. Rider outscored the Marist bench 10-6 in the closing minutes.
In addition to having 12 of 13 players score, 11 players had at least one rebound and seven had assists. Dahlman was just shy of her career-high, posting 20 points, seven rebounds and three blocks and had a balanced effort, scoring 10 points in each half. She was joined in double-figures by redshirt freshman Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) who tallied 13 points, three steals and was a flawless five assists to no turnovers. Reigning MAAC Player of the Week Fifi Camara (Conakry, Guinea) had her lowest scoring output ever as a Red Fox, with six points, but contributed six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Kara Borel led Rider with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Danielle Constantio and Janele Henderson each had 12.
The Red Foxes are back in action when they head to Manhattan for a 2:00 p.m. tip on Sunday.
