Final Stats
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Baylor transfer Corey Herring notched career-highs with 28 points on 11-for-16 shooting and nine rebounds to lead the Canisius men's squad to a 76-67 win over Marist Thursday evening at the McCann Center. The win gave the Golden Griffins their sixth straight win in the series between the two schools. Canisius improved to 3-8 overall (2-1 MAAC), while the Red Foxes dropped to 5-5 overall and 0-3 in the league.
After falling behind by nine (13-4) at the 14:58 mark of the first half on a Jared Jordan (Hartford, Conn.) layup, Canisius jetted out on a 12-0 run over the next 4:20 to go ahead by three (16-13) on a layup by Ola Matti with 11:38 to go in the first stanza. The Golden Griffins held a one-point lead (25-24) with 4:01 to go in the first half, but surrendered a 7-0 rally down the stretch to the Red Foxes to go into the half down six (31-25).
Marist seemed to be in control of the game with 17:41 to go in the game when junior Will Whittington (Kingwood, Tx.) hit a 3-pointer to give the Red Foxes a 12-point lead (39-27). However, the Golden Griffins gradually wore down the taller Red Foxes with a 24-10 run over the next 8:34 to take a 51-49 lead at the 9:07 mark. The Golden Griffins pulled away the rest of the way and the Red Foxes never threatened.
Canisius' leading scorer Kevin Downey, who came into Thursday's game averaging 15.1 points per game, finished with eight points, but didn't dent the scoreboard until the 5:08 mark of the second half with a jumper from the right wing. It was only the second time in 31 games that the Livonia, N.Y. native failed to register double digits.
Marist redshirt sophomore Ryan Stilphen (Bay Village, Ohio) and Jordan scored 17 points to lead the way for Marist, while senior Carl Hood had 10.
The Red Foxes, who outrebounded Canisius 41-32, were led by Hood and Stilphen's eight rebounds. Jordan, who entered the game sixth in the nation with 6.7 assists per game, tallied seven assists.
Whittington finished the game with nine points, but went only 3-for-13 from the field and 3-for-11 from 3-point range.
Canisius' Chuck Harris and Jon Popofski had 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Marist finished the game shooting 41.9 percent (26-for-62) from the field, while Canisius went 25-for-54 (46.3 percent). Marist's 3-point prowess was off Thursday as it made just 26.9 percent (7-for-26), while the Golden Griffins made 36.4 percent (8-for-22). Canisius also held the edge at the line, making 72 percent (18-for-25), while Marist went 8-for-14. The Red Foxes are 2-19 in the Matt Brady era when they take more 3-pointers (26 to 22) and shoot less than 45 percent (41.9).
The Red Foxes will now travel to Loyola for a Sunday tip at 1 p.m. against the Greyhounds. Marist swept the season series last season.
