Marist Falls At Wright State, 63-53

Dec. 19, 2006

Final Stats

DAYTON, OHIO-The Wright State men's basketball team held Marist to 16 points in the first half and held off the Red Foxes in the second half for a 63-53 win at the Nutter Center Tuesday night. The Red Foxes played the game without senior point guard Jared Jordan (Hartford, Conn.), their leading scorer and the national leader in assists, who missed the contest due to a sprained left ankle that was suffered during the 89-70 victory at Saint Peter's on Dec. 10.

Marist jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but that turned out to be the only advantage the Red Foxes would have all night as the Raiders followed with seven straight points, four coming from Vaughn Duggins, to go in front for good. Wright State then used an 11-2 run, including two three-pointers from Todd Brown, to extend the margin to 18-7 with 7:41 remaining in the first half.

An 8-0 burst, capped off by 3-pointers from Brown and Duggins, gave WSU its biggest lead of the night at 28-15 with just over a minute to play in the half.

Marist was able to trim the deficit to four at 41-37 with six minutes to play, but the Raiders responded with a 7-1 run, all coming from DaShaun Wood. The Red Foxes would come as close as five on four different occasions down the stretch, but Wright State hit seven of eight from the foul line the final 1:02 to seal the victory.

Marist outshot (39-37 percent) and outrebounded (40-30) WSU, but the Raiders countered by hitting eight of 20 attempts from three-point range, including three each from Brown and Duggins, and made 17 of 21 foul shots for the game, 17 of 19 the final 20 minutes, compared to just 10 of 19 for the Red Foxes.

Wood led Wright State with 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Duggins had 16 and Brown 11 off the bench.

Redshirt junior forward Ryan Stilphen (Bay Village, Ohio) paced the Red Foxes (8-3) with 20 points, while senior Will Whittington (Kingwood, Tx.) added 10. Sophomore guard Gerald Carter (Harlem, N.Y.) led Marist with seven rebounds, while Whittington had three assists.

The Red Foxes will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 29 at 7:30 p.m. when Northern Illinois (2-5) visits the McCann Center on the first day of action in the Pepsi Marist Classic. Bucknell (4-5) will square off with Central Arkansas (1-6) at 5 p.m. in the first game. The consolation game will be Saturday, Dec. 30 at 5 p.m., while the championship contest will follow at 7:30 p.m.
