BOSTON, MASS - Junior Bryan Quinn (East Northport, NY) qualified for the IC4A Championships in the 1,000-meter run, and set a school record in the process, and freshmen David Raucci (Clermont, NY) and Girma Segni (Bronx, NY) also earned IC4A qualifying marks to lead the Marist College men's track team at the St. Valentine Invitational, held Saturday at Boston University. It was the first time in program history that three individuals qualified for the IC4A Championships on the same day.
Quinn stormed to a personal-record time of 2:28.56 in the five-lap race, eclipsing the 3-year-old mark of 2:29.33 set by Chris McCloskey at the 2003 IC4A Championships, also held at Boston University. McCloskey, a 2003 Marist graduate, was at the meet competing as part of the Marist Alumni Racing Team.
Segni started the day with his IC4A qualifier in the 5,000-meter run. The freshman won his section of the event in 14:43.29, which was four seconds faster than the championship standard. It was Segni s first attempt at the distance. Raucci, also running his event for the first time as a collegian, earned his IC4A mark in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:26.78.
There were several other personal-record performances on the day. In the 3,000, sophomore Mike Rolek (Maplewood, NJ) shaved six seconds off his previous best with a time of 8:49.79. Junior Matt Syzmaszek (West Simsbury, CT) clipped nearly 20 seconds off his previous best with a time of 8:52.75. Senior captain Sean Prinz (Wantagh, NY), running the event for just the second time, improved by 10 seconds with a best of 8:56.96.
