BALTIMORE, MD - The Marist Men's Swimming and Diving Team stands in second place with 199 points after the first day of competition at the 2006 MAAC Championships hosted by Loyola. Marist trails Rider who holds the lead with 230 points. The 200-yard freestyle relay team got Marist started on Thursday evening by taking second place in a time of 1:24.34. Junior Nick Chevalier (Milford, N.H.) led the way in the 500-yard freestyle by taking third place.
After the morning preliminary session, the 200 freestyle relay team of Chevalier, Will Shearouse (Milford, N.H.), Greg Jablonski (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Pat Collins (Nutley, N.J.) took the second position, as they were beaten to the wall by Rider, who posted a time of 1:23.43.
Chevalier was back in the water for the 500-yard free, as he led the Marist contingent with a time of 4:38.86. He was followed by freshman Spencer Hartmann (Windsor, Conn.) in fourth who showed a time of 4:41.92 and Ralph Rienzo (Wallingford, Conn.) in fifth with a time of 4:43.19. All three of their times met ECAC `A' qualifying standards. Senior captain Alec Troxell (Andreas, Pa.) finished 10th overall in a time of 4:48.69, which is met the ECAC `B' standard.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Marist was led by Joe Pilewski (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) who took the second position by posting a time of 1:52.77. Jablonski and Brandon Youse (Boyertown, Pa.) followed in fourth and sixth, with times of 1:54.69 and 1:56.91, respectively. All three times were ECAC `A' qualifying standards.
The final individual event of the day for the Red Foxes was the 50-yard freestyle. Collins took second place, clocking in at 21.03 seconds. Shearouse followed in seventh with a time of 21.80 seconds. Both times were ECAC qualifiers. Rounding out the Marist field in the 50-freestyle were Ed Gurka (Pompton Plains, N.J.) and senior Kevin Bobenchik (Rahway, N.J.) who finished 14th and 15th, respectively.
Marist closed out the day by placing second in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Dan Garaffa (Manchester, Conn.), Pilewski, Kevin Connors (Holmedel, N.J.) and Collins was edged by Rider as the Broncs touched out in 3:23.78 to the Foxes 3:23.84.
The Red Foxes will be back in the pool on Friday for day two. Competition will start at 9:30 a.m. with preliminary rounds.
