Baltimore, Md. -
Loyola's Jill Glessner had 20 points to lead the Greyhounds (16-9/11-5 MAAC) past Marist (19-6/14-2 MAAC) this afternoon, 62-59 at Reitz Arena. Despite the loss, Marist remains in first place in the MAAC and maintains the number-one seed at the upcoming tournament. Fifi Camara (Conakry, Guinea) led Marist with 20 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
Marist opened the game on a 7-0 run and held Loyola scoreless for the first 3:30. The Red Foxes kept the pressure on, responding each time the Greyhounds made a bucket. Sophomore Courtney Kolesar (Painesville, Ohio) connected on Marist's first four-point play of the season, draining a big three and making the ensuing free-throw to put Marist up 22-10 (8:42). With Marist up 24-16 at 5:09, the Greyhounds went on a 6-2 mini-run and forced a pair of turnovers. Though Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) extended Marist's lead to 10-points at 2:23, Loyola went on a 7-0 lead capped by a Krystle Harrington triple to cut it to 32-29, Marist at the half.
The Greyhounds carried their momentum into the second half, and though Marist led, the Greyhounds chipped away methodically. The Foxes led 45-39 at 12:48 but the Hounds went on an 11-0 run to go up 50-45 at 8:49. Camara stopped the bleeding with a layup to get Marist within three, but Loyola had an answer for everything the Red Foxes put up. She came up big again with four-straight points late in the game, cutting Loyola's lead to 60-59 with 1:20 remaining.
Loyola grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds and Glessner made two free-throws to extend her team's lead, 62-59 with 51 seconds remaining. Viani had a big steal with 13 seconds remaining to set Meg Dahlman (Spencerport, N.Y.) up for the game-tying three, but she was just off the mark and Loyola held out to win.
Marist shot just 33% in the loss while the Greyhounds connected on 45% of their attempts.
Camara was tied for the game's high scoring spot and led all rebounders. Dahlman was held to an uncharacteristic eight points, while senior Kristen Vilardi (Fishkill, N.Y.) added 11 points and four rebounds.
Glessner led Loyola with 20 while Lauren Troupe had a double-double on 12 points, 11 rebounds.
Marist is back in action on Thursday when it hosts Fairfield at 5:00 p.m. Prior to the game, Marist will honor seniors Camara, Vilardi and Erin Leger.
