DELAND, FLA - The Marist Softball squad closed out its trip to Florida on Sunday with a 4-1 loss at the hands of Western Michigan. The Red Foxes got out of the gates early as Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, N.Y.) led off the bottom of the first with her first homerun of the season.
McHugh drove a two strike pitch of Broncos' starter Krysten Shumaker over the right center field wall to give Marist a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
The lead held until the top of the third inning. The Broncos were able to push across two runs in the frame, to take a lead they would not relinquish. Western Michigan put the first two runners on via infield singles. They were moved up to second and third by a sacrifice bunt, before Kristi Strange drove a ball up the middle for a two run single.
Western Michigan would cling to the one run lead, until the top of the sixth inning, when they added two insurance runs on a two-out, two-run error.
Marist starter Megan Rigos (Lebanon, Pa.) was again solid, as she picked up her third complete game of the weekend. On Sunday, she gave up just two earned runs on five hits, while recording five strikeouts. With the loss she fell to 1-2 on the season.
Marist currently stands at 1-4 on the season and will look to rebound when they return to action on March 7 when it hosts Army. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at Gartland Athletic Field.
