POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Junior Jared Jordan (Hartford, Conn.) notched his team-high sixth double-double with 16 points and 10 assists as the Marist men's basketball squad picked up its 10th win in 11 games with a 73-62 victory over visiting Rider Wednesday evening at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes moved to 15-7 overall with the win and 9-5 in league play, while Rider dropped to 8-14 overall and 4-10 in the MAAC.
Jordan entered the game second nationally at 8.6 assists per game, just one tenth of an assist behind national leader Jose Juan Barea of Northeastern. The 6'2 guard also had a career-high six steals and played the entire game yet again. He also entered the week tops in the nation in percentage of team minutes played (96.8 percent).
Jordan shared team scoring honors with backcourt mate junior Will Whittington (Kingwood, Tx.), who also posted a career-high and team-leading eight rebounds. Junior James Smith (Nyack, N.Y.) also posted 15 points and six rebounds in the victory.
Edwin Muniz led the Broncs with a double-double of his own of 26 points and 11 rebounds. Terrance Mouton led Rider with four assists, while Jason Thompson had three blocks.
After Muniz and Lamar Johnson began the game for Rider with a basket and a 3-pointer, Marist took the lead for good with a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Smith at the 17:42 mark to make the score 8-5 Red Foxes. Marist led the rest of the way, but Rider made things interesting by closing the gap to one twice, the last time at the 18:00 mark (38-37) on a jumper by Paul Johnson.
However, Marist put together a 24-11 run over the next 10:44 to take its largest lead of the game at the 7:16 mark (62-48) on a Smith dunk.
The Red Foxes especially hurt Rider in the turnover column, turning 18 Bronc turnovers in 22 Marist points.
For the season, Marist is 13-4 when it leads at the half, 8-0 when its opponents score 68 points or less and 15-1 when it holds the lead in games at the 5:00 mark of the second half.
Marist shot 25-for-60 from the field (41.7 percent) to Rider's 42.6 mark (26-for-61). The Red Foxes also hit 36.4 percent (8-for-22) from the 3-point line, while Rider hit 28.6 percent (8-for-28). Perhaps, Marist's biggest success was at the free throw line when Marist hit 15-for-18, while Rider hit 40 percent (2-for-5).
