GEORGETOWN, DEL. - The Marist Softball team picked up its third and fourth straight wins on Friday by beating St. Francis (N.Y.) 10-0 and host Delaware State 7-6 in nine innings at the Mizuno Bash At The Beach Tournament. Sophomore Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up the win on the mound in game one, while senior Katie Eskin (Edison, N.J.) drove in the game winning run in the ninth against Delaware State.
Rigos continued to dominate for Marist, as she pitched a complete game in a shortened contest in game one. She fired her second consecutive shutout in the win, going five innings surrendering just two hits and striking out five. For the second straight outing Rigos received more then enough run support as the Foxes pushed across a season high ten runs.
Freshman Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.) smacked her first career homerun in the win, as she went 2-3 in the contest with two RBI. Chrystine McHugh (Port Ewen, N.Y.) also went 2-3 including a double, as she scored three runs for the Foxes. Bridget Hurlman (Yonkers, N.Y.) added a hit and knocked in two runs as well for Marist.
Game two was a wild affair, as the Foxes needed nine innings to down the host Hornets. Green got the nod on the hill for Marist and went four plus innings, surrendering six hits and four runs. After Kristen Merlino (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless fifth, Rigos came on for the next two innings. The Hornets were able to plate two runs to tie the contest against Marist's ace, but she was able to keep the game tied to set up Eskin's game winner in the ninth.
With the international tie breaker rule in effect both teams started with a runner on second base and no one out starting in the eighth inning. With Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) on second base Eskin singled to plate the go ahead run. Carpentier came on in the top of ninth to shut the door and pick her first career win.
Jasmery Polanco (Bay Shore, N.Y.) went 2-4 in the contest, while Green continued to swing a productive bat, driving in two more runs in the victory.
Marist is now winners of four straight and has run its record to 5-4 after winning one of its first five games. The Red Foxes will be back in action in the Bash At The Beach tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. when they take on Penn and Delaware.
