March 25, 2006

Final Stats

LEXINGTON, VA. - After having its MAAC contest with VMI pushed from noon to 7 p.m. due to inclement weather, the Marist Men's Lacrosse squad earned a 12-8 win over MAAC foe VMI. Senior Captains Bill Duerr (Manasquan, N.J.) and Tim Iuculano (Silver Spring, Md.) led the way for Marist with four and three goals, respectively.

Marist got out of the gates quickly, as it took a 5-1 lead after one quarter of play. Iuculano and Duerr scored goals eight seconds apart at 3:39 and 3:27 of the first to open up a 4-1 lead.

After VMI tied the score at 1-1 with a goal by Steve Long, Marist reeled off the next six goals, before VMI cut the lead to 6-2 at the 11:20 mark of the second. Four goals is as close as the Keydets would get until they cut the deficit to three at 11-8, with just over four minutes to go in the game. Marist would put the game away at the 3:12 mark of the fourth on Duerr's fourth of the game on an assist from Sophomore Dan Needle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.).

Freshman Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was again in the cage for Marist and was again solid for the Foxes as he picked up his third win by making 15 stops.

Although Marist held a comfortable lead for much of the game, shots for the contest were even at 40 apiece. VMI picked up 13 more groundballs then Marist at 35-22. Marist held the advantage in faceoffs as they won 14 of the 22 draws in the contest. Marist was successful on 18 of 28 clearing attempts, but went just 2-11 with its extra man opportunities.

With the win Marist is above the .500 mark for the season at 3-2 and stands at a perfect 2-0 in MAAC play. The Red Foxes will look to build on a two game winning streak when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y. on Tuesday for a non-conference tilt with Colgate. Face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
