Red Foxes Stay Perfect In MAAC, Down Wagner 13-9

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Led by a balanced attack that featured four multi-goal scorers the Marist Men's Lacrosse team downed Wagner 13-9 in its home opener Saturday afternoon. The Red Foxes were led by Andrew Walsh (Liverpool, N.Y.) with three goals and an assist on the day.

Marist got out to an early 4-0 lead, but three straight goals by the Seahawks cut the deficit to 4-3 after the first quarter of play. Keyed by the solid play of freshman goalkeeper Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), the Red Foxes allowed only one second quarter goal, as they took a 7-4 advantage into halftime.

Marist outscored Wagner by one, 6-5, in the second half to seal its fourth victory of the season and its third straight league win.

Walsh again was the offensive standout for Marist as his four point day moved him into a tie for the team lead in points with 14. He is tied with Tim Iuculano (Silver Spring, Md.) who had a pair of markers on the day, giving him 11 on the year. Nick Hautau (South Salem, N.Y.) and Tim Pfeffer (Penfield, N.Y.) also posted a pair of goals for Marist in the win.

Penner continued his solid rookie campign in the cage for the Foxes, as he made 12 stops in moving his record on the season to 4-3.

Marist held the advantage in nearly every statistical category on Saturday, as it was successful on 10 of 15 clearing attempts and committed two fewer turnovers then the Seahawks.

The Red Foxes' were 13-23 in draws, led by Dan Needle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) who won 10 of the 19 draws he took on the afternoon. Needle also added a goal in the win.

Marist also outshot Wagner by a 58-28 margin, which included 36 shots on goal.

Marist moved to 4-3 on the season with the win and remains perfect in league play with a 3-0 record. Marist will be home once again on April 8 when it hosts MAAC rival Mount Saint Mary's to Leonidoff Field for a 1 p.m. face-off.
