Final Stats
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Marist Men's Lacrosse Team rebounded from a 10-4 loss against Bellarmine to earn an 8-7 last minute victory over Siena on Wednesday afternoon. Pete O'Hara (Babylon, N.Y.) scored the game winner for Marist with just 47 seconds left in regulation.
Tim Iuculano (Silver Spring, Md.) opened the scoring and gave Marist a 1-0 lead with 9:26 to play in the opening quarter. Siena would come back to tie the score with 8:11 left before Nick Hautau finished the first of his two tallies with just under seven minutes remaining to give Marist a 2-1 lead after one quarter of play.
Marist would score the only two goals of the second period when Hautau tallied his second of the game and 17th of the season with 12:21 to play in the first half. Junior Keith Detelj (Sayville, N.Y.), who was returning after missing the previous two games due to an injury, scored his first of two on the afternoon with just under four minutes to play in the half to give Marist a 4-1 lead heading into the intermission.
Siena would come out charging in the third quarter as it shut the Red Foxes out in the frame 3-0 to tie the score at 4-4 heading into the final fifteen minutes. Chris Zarins, Matt Walsh and Matt Girsh all tallied in the third for the Saints to knot the score.
The fourth quarter was a see-saw affair with Marist jumping out to a 6-4 lead with 12:27 left to play in regulation. Andrew Walsh (Liverpool, N.Y.) and Iuculano scored the two for Marist, before Greg Powell and Matt Walsh scored the next two goals 50 seconds apart to tie the score again, this time at six goals apiece.
With just under eight and half minutes to play Detelj scored to give Marist back a one goal advantage before Walsh tied the score at 7-7 on his third with 4:47 left to go in regulation play.
That set the stage for O'Hara's late game heroics. With just 47 ticks left on the clock he took a pass from Walsh and beat Siena net minder David Jalette to send Marist to the 8-7 victory.
For the game Marist out shot Siena 36-27 and held the advantage in ground balls at 45-33. Marist was successful on 21 of its 23 clearing attempts and rebounded from a 0-9 performance with the extra man in its last game to convert its only opportunity on Wednesday.
Dan Needle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) was again solid on face-offs for the Red Foxes as he won 11 of the 18 draws he took in the game. Marist won 11 of the 19 total draws in the contest.
Freshman goalie Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) improved his record to 6-5 on the season as he made seven saves in the winning effort.
At 6-5 overall and now 4-1 in MAAC action Marist will be in back in action on Saturday night when it hosts St. Joseph's. Face-off for the MAAC tilt is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Leonidoff Field. Prior to the contest Marist will honor the four members of its senior class on Senior Night.
