POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Junior third baseman Pat Feeney (New City, N.Y.) contributed three RBI and four runs while the Marist pitching staff put forth strong starts in the doubleheader wins over Canisius Sunday afternoon at the McCann Baseball Field. Marist won the first game 5-2 and the second contest 12-3. The Red Foxes moved to 9-13 overall and 4-2 in the league, while the Golden Griffins fell to 7-20 overall and 1-5 in the MAAC.
In the first game, Feeney knocked in three runs with a 2-for-3 effort with a run scored. He also notched his team-high eighth double of the season. Junior designated hitter Justin Lepore (Madison, Conn.) swatted his team-leading sixth home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning on his way to a 3-for-4 effort with two RBI and a run scored.
The Golden Griffs got RBIs from right fielder Matt Mazurek and third baseman Kevin Mahoney.
Redshirt senior George Heath (2-2, Henrietta, N.Y.) picked up his second win of the season, yielding one earned run on three hits in six innings. He also struck out five and walked none. Canisius' John Axford (0-5) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in five and two-thirds innings. He also struck out six and walked nine. Junior Robert Ryan (Roslindale, Mass.) came on in the seventh and nailed down his seventh save, allowing just one hit.
The Red Foxes took advantage of 13 Canisius walks in the second game, plating 12 runs on just seven hits. Feeney had a pair of hits in the second game, while junior right fielder Tom Ciccarone (Somerville, N.J.) had three RBI. Redshirt junior Adam Pernasilici (Tecumseh, Ontario) and freshman first baseman Brian Gibbs (Pittsford, N.Y.) also drove in a pair of runs. Feeney also scored three runs in the contest.
The Griffs picked up RBIs from second baseman Kevin Smith and shortstop Matt Tupek.
Sophomore hurler Tom Close (2-1, Devon, Pa.) got the win, giving up three runs on five hits to go with four strikeouts and one walk in seven innings. Canisius starter Matt Weber (3-3) lasted just one inning, yielding five earned runs on four hits to go with one strikeout and a pair of walks.
Marist will travel to Army on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. contest.
