POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-The Marist baseball squad battled back Tuesday to earn a split with the Brown Bears with a rain-shortened 5-1 victory in the second game of the doubleheader between the two schools at McCann Field. Brown scored a pair of runs off Marist junior closer Robert Ryan (Roslindale, Mass.) to overcome the Red Foxes 7-6 in the first game. Marist moved to 16-22 overall, while the Bears went to 12-21.
Brown was led by three hits apiece from left fielder Danny Hughes and center fielder Steve Daniels in the first contest. Hughes also led the team with three RBIs, while Daniels scored three times. Marist was paced by two hits apiece from senior first baseman Kevin Grauer (Plain City, Ohio), senior shortstop Andy Kiriakedes (Great Barrington, Mass.) and junior right fielder Tom Ciccarone (Somerville, N.J.). Sophomore catcher Keith Glasser (Rensselaer, N.Y.) also scored a pair of runs, while Ciccarone knocked in a pair of tallies.
Brown's Ethan Burton (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, tossing one and a third perfect innings of relief. Ryan suffered his third loss (1-3) of the 2006 campaign, pitching one inning and allowing one earned run on three hits. The Bears' Rob Hallberg also nailed down his first save of the season with a scoreless seventh inning in which he allowed a hit and a walk, but also had a strikeout.
Rain peppered the two teams throughout the second game and eventually shortened the contest after four and a half innings. Grauer had two hits for Marist in game two, while junior right fielder Travis Musolf (Manchester, N.J.) had two-run sacrifice fly to deep center in the fourth inning. Senior catcher Bryan Towler (Hampton, N.H.) had the other big hit in the inning with a two-run double to right, his fifth of the season. Hughes knocked in the Bears' only run with a single to right earlier in the frame.
Marist freshman hurler Josh Rickards (2-0, Glenolden, Pa.) went the distance in his best outing of the season for the Red Foxes. The lefthander tossed five innings, yielding one run on four hits with five strikeouts and just one walk. Brown reliever Paul Costa (0-1) took the loss, throwing one inning and allowing Marist four earned runs on three hits and one walk.
The Red Foxes will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Quinnipiac (14-17-1) for a 3 p.m. game.
