Final Stats
BUFFALO, N.Y. - Canisius featured three multiple goal scorers led by Kiel Illg with three markers to overtake Marist 8-3 in the regular season finale. Tim Iuculano (Silver Spring, Md.) scored twice for Marist and Bill Duerr (Manasquan, N.J.) added a marker for the Foxes in the loss.
Canisius took an early 2-0 lead as Michael Blocho and Kevin Ross tallied for the Griffs four minutes apart to hold a two goal advantage after the first quarter. Marist would score the first goal of the second period, on Iuculano's first of the night, with 2:35 remaining to cut the deficit to one goal, but the Red Foxes would give up a goal with just over a minute to play in the half to trail 3-1 heading into the intermission.
The Griffs would dominate the third by outscoring Marist 4-1 in the frame. Illg scored two of his three goals in the third, as Canisius put the game away.
Marist would outshoot Canisius in the tilt 37-35, but could only get three shots past Canisius net minder Tom Kucharczak, who made 19 saves on the evening.
Canisius did hold the advantage in ground balls at 33-22, while neither team committed a turnover in the game.
The Red Foxes were successful on one of six extra man opportunities, as well as 17 of their 20 clearing attempts. Dan Needle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) won seven of the 14 face-offs he took in the came.
With the loss Marist closes out the regular season at 6-8 and 4-4 in the MAAC Lacrosse League. Marist, the fourth seed, in this weekend's MAAC Tournament in Buffalo will take on top seeded Providence at 4 p.m. on Friday May 5.
